5 WEEKS AFTER CYCLONE NARGIS

The village of „Shwe Kyune Tar, deep in the south of the Ayeyarwaddy Delta, was a very idyllic
village, before cyclone Nargis brought dead and devastation on May 2nd. Up to this day the people had not so much to worry, as everybody had a place to stay and enough to eat. There was a monastery, the heart of the village, and even a little school.

After cyclone Nargis had passed and the 3-4 meter high tidal wave had almost washed everything away, there was nothing left from the village. The houses were gone and even from the once so splendid monastery, were only the steps left. From 900 women, men and children, only 200 women, men and children survived the cyclone.

The survivors were brought by boat to Myaung Mya (appr. 9 hours). There they found for the time being shelter and security at the Shwetahlyaung Pagoda.

On May 16th (2 weeks after the cyclone) we brought food, clothes and medicine to Myaung Mya and met during our stay also the survivors from „Shwe Kyune Tar“. Spontaneous we had decided to help those villagers in the coming weeks and months and as the villagers were going back to their village (or what was left), we were back in Myaung Mya together with Shwe Yee’s brother, U Soe Yi and Ma Khin Myat Maw (two of our guides), buying food, medicine, drinking water and other important things needed for the first days and travelling with the villagers via Labutta to „Shwe Khun Tar“.

The journey was very hard and what we had seen on the way had touched us deeply. Upon arrival in “Shwe Khun Tar”, the whole group was standing in front of the destroyed village, the white flag visible for all of us.

Between May 13 and May 21 we received the amount of US$ 3880,35 and delivered food, drinking water, medicine and clothes to 2 villages in the delta region.

Between May 22 and June 6 we received more donations, all together US$ 4186,99 and had spend a part of the donation to buy construction material to build new huts, a pump to get the spoiled water out of the village pond, food, more medicine and kitchenware.

We would like to help those people for a time period of 6 months to 12 months and hope also for your kind support.
