Rv PANDAW1947
had been in the Dalla dry-dock for her annual maintenance
since 3 days before the storm struck. That night the force
of the wind pushed her partly outside the slip bars (the
ship tilted Fig.1) causing a “not heavy” damage of the hull
in 3 sections. The dock basin was inundated by the high tide
water and part of the ship main deck was submerged. We have
been working to weld the hull and dry the "dry-dock" since
the day after and finally yesterday (22nd of May) we had the
ship floating again on the river (Fig.2). Soon after the dry
dock will be ready we will get the ship back in for the
annual maintenance and repairs according to our “before the
storm” program. The jobs are scheduled to be finished in
about 3 months time, on time to have the ship 100% ready for
the 2008-2009 tourist season.

The ship did not suffer any damages by the storm because
it was in Mandalay!
But unfortunately in the evening of the 12th of May a fire
broke out in the housekeeping storeroom located at the stern
of the ship (Fig 3-4). The alarm bell rang and the crew
promptly started to fight the fire. It was finally
extinguished in about 45 minutes with the help of the
Mandalay fire brigade. The damages were limited to the
storeroom and the housekeeping items such as linen etc. The
problem was due to an electrical shock caused by an improper
connection done by a local electrician. The rest of the ship
was not affected by the fire at all (Fig4-5). An electrical
engineers team from Yangon has inspected the ship the day
after. Repairs are now underway and are to be completed next
month.
