In the heart of the mountains, located some 200 kilometres north-east of Myanmar’s second largest city, Mandalay, the valley of Mogok has been producing the most beautiful rubies and the most unusual legends for over a thousand years.
Yet Mogok has much more to offer than just precious stones. Little towns, villages and gardens are dotted here and there across the hills, which are covered with shrubs and flowers and decorated with well-kept Buddhist shrines. The tips of the gold leaf-covered pagodas stretch towards the sky like golden sculptures jutting out of rock formations and line the only main road in the region, as well as gravel roads and footpaths.

Day 01 MANDALAY – MOGOK (L, D)

After an early breakfast, the journey will lead through fields, jungles, mountains and mountain villages until you reach Mogok after some six hours of driving (217 kilometres). After four hours, make a stop in the village of Shwe Nyaungbin, named after the majestic banyan tree. There you can try a bowl of Shan Khauk Swe, a traditional dish with Shan noodles. You will reach the village of Kyat Pyin to the west of Mogok by the afternoon. Visit the gemstone mines in opencast and underground mining. You will get the chance to enter the mines and observe as the gemstones are sorted. Dinner and overnight stay at the Golden Butterfly Hotel.

Day 02 MOGOK (B, L, D)

Today visit a local gemstone market and learn more about the differences in characteristics and quality of the stones that are extracted in Mogok and the surrounding area. You will have the opportunity to visit some of the locations where mining operations are prevalent and learn more about how precious stones are extracted. You will also visit some of the most famous pagodas in Mogok and explore the town and nearby villages as part of relaxing walks. Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight stay at the Golden Butterfly Hotel.

Day 03 MOGOK (B, L, D)

After breakfast, a leisurely hiking tour to the Lisu minorities awaits you in the villages of Pyaung Gaung and Pan Lyin to the west of Mogok. You will pass tea plantations and other small villages on the way. You will receive a packed lunch or you can eat at one of the local houses during the tour. Return to Mogok in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay at the Golden Butterfly Hotel.

Day 04 MOGOK – MANDALAY (B, L)

After breakfast, you will make your way back to Mandalay on the now familiar route (217 kilometres / approx. 6 hours). Lunch at a local restaurant to break up the journey. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel, check in and overnight stay.
