6 Days Rakhine State
Fly to Sittwe, the state capital, which has a seaport and a lush hinterland that produce crops, fish and Rakhine longyis. Take a chartered boat upstream on the Kiccepanadi River to Mrauk Oo and explore by bicycle the capital of the Rakhine Kingdom, which had its heyday from the 15th to the 18th century and is famous for its fortress-like temples and stone and brick pagodas, as well as its unmistakable sculpture and relief art. Travel upstream on the Lay Mro River and hike to the local villages inhabited by the Rakhine and Lai Tu Chin people. The villagers’ day-to-day lives have remained largely unaffected by the modern world, with the people still relying on fishing and farming for sustenance. This short trek will give you plenty of time to learn more about this tradition and the lives of the people as you walk through the villages.
